For many years I dreamed about working in clay...
I
remember feeling this way back in college.
Life, though, has a funny way of interfering and a full time career did
not leave me the time to explore this dream. Then, a good friend gave me the perfect birthday gift: a 25 pound bag of clay and the willingness to
take lessons with me. It took me
half a lifetime, but I quickly got serious about my work and am now
happily immersed in clay, creating pottery and sculptural forms in clay.
In each form I create, I look to find elegance and
refinement, and, a bit of functionality as well. I am
drawn to unusual, exaggerated shapes and textures. My newest work is influenced by a life lived near water .... with forms that evoke memories of floating down river, Asian vessels at sea and sleekly elegant ships. These vessels can be used for Ikebana or for holding a variety of items from tea lightsto hand towels, soaps, or other items, or simply enjoy it as an object d'Art. Even the large platters I love to make seem to float off the ground.
The creation of ceramic art, whether a
"pot" or a sculpture, involves both technical skill and
creativity. But behind it all, for me, there is nothing quite like
the joy of immersing myself in clay and attempting to make something beautiful
from it.
I want people to want to touch my work and for my
work to touch them.
What people are saying...
"A great variety of form and color"
